Useful Information Regarding Oil Rig Drill Bit

By Donald Lewis

The convenience and efficiency of the modern lifestyle depends mostly on petroleum products which are extracted deep in the crust of the earth. In order to extract these products, it requires drilling deep in the earth to reach the petroleum products and oil deposits. The equipment used normally comprises of various parts and among the most essential components is the oil rig drill bit.

When drilling, rocks and soil is cut by the drill bits. The bits are designed with the ability to cut through rocks as well as through other ground materials. This makes it possible for gas and other petroleum products to be accessed. Below the drilling collar and pipe there is the drill string on whose tip the bits are located.

Drills usually excavate by rotating. Some of the hardest materials on earth are used to make the cones of the bits. Bits usually have two or three cones. Tungsten carbide, diamond and steel are some of the materials used to make the cones. Both synthetic and natural diamonds can be used in making the cones. Cones cut through rocks and soil using the sharp teeth they have at their tips.

Percussion drilling is different from rotary drilling in many ways. In percussion drilling, a huge weight is continuously lifted and dropped in the wellbore to chip away at the rock and soil. In contrast, rotary drilling uses a rotating mechanism to scrape, cut, crush, and grind rock located at the bottom of the well. The system that does the job usually comprises of a hoisting apparatus, prime mover, drilling fluid, rotating equipment, drilling collar, and bits.

The power required for the process to happen is provided by the prime mover as the hoisting equipment is used to lift the drilling pipe. The pipe is usually lifted when being inserted into or pulled from the well. The rotating mechanism gets everything moving through rotary motion. In order to make sure that the drill string remains buoyant, drilling fluid is needed. This fluid is also responsible for lubricating the entire process and it also carries out chips from the well.

There are various varieties of bits with the steel tooth rotary bits being the most common. Insert bits are other types that are made from steel with inserts of tungsten carbide. Synthetic diamonds are used to make polycrystalline diamond compact bits that are attached to carbide inserts.

As compared to steel bits, diamond bits are the hardest bits available in the market. These bits are 50 times stronger than those made from steel. Normally, they are used to drill very hard surfaces. Apart from the different bits mentioned above, there are hybrid bits which are made by combining various materials. These kinds of bits are used to deal with specific challenges in various drilling conditions.

In order to achieve varying results, drilling can be done using various designs. Mill bits, core bits and fishtail bits are some of these designs. In the drilling process, different purposes are accomplished by different designs. The material used to make the bits determines how much they cost.
