Private detectives have been the central topic of many films and television series. It is no wonder that so many people see them as either romantic figures, salty older guys struggling to make a living or even flamboyant playboys. They solve complicated crimes and they seem to be in perpetual competition with the police. The reality is different, however. Most private detective are highly professional and when hiring a PI Lexington KY clients expect solid results within a reasonable time frame.

Becoming a private investigator is not, in most cases, simply a matter of hanging out a shingle. In most states they have to be licensed in order to operate and in some cases they need to undergo formal training. There are some states, nevertheless, where no license is required. This career field attracts a wide variety of individuals, not just crusty older retired cops. It is a diverse field that requires diverse talents and qualifications.

In the television series and films private detectives lead glamorous and dangerous lives. The reality is that the bulk of the income earned by most detectives come from tracing people in order to deliver legal documents or to collect debt. Many detectives are also hired to trace the whereabouts of run away children and family members. This type of work can be time consuming and monotonous but it keeps the wolves from the door.

Ordinary civilians are perfectly entitled to instigate separate investigations in criminal cases. Victims of crime sometimes feel that the police is not paying proper attention to the case and they hire a private detective to run a parallel investigation. Many criminal cases have been resolved by private detectives operating on behalf of private clients. They have a definite financial incentive to succeed.

Private detectives are also often hired to investigate civil cases. In the case of individuals, a suspicious spouse may hire a detective to provide proof that his wife is cheating on him. Many businesses also hire detectives to investigate a wide range of issues. This can be suspected fraud or industrial espionage or it may simply be to investigate the private lives of employees due for sensitive positions.

Private detectives are increasingly hired to provide discreet personal protection to wealthy individuals and their families. Other than a bodyguard, the detective does not hover over his charges, but rather keep a covert watch from a distance. Many wealthy people do not want to attract undue attention by the presence of bodyguards. Over the long term, such protection services can be extremely costly.

Choosing a private investigator is not a straight forward matter. It is important to hire someone that has ample experience in working on the type of case in question. They should be able to provide valid references and they must most certainly submit a formal quotation clearly stipulating the cost and the responsibilities the accept. Larger investigation firms often employ several people that are all specialized in a specific field.

The private investigation industry has grown into a large industry. This is in part because the police simply do not have the resources required to deal with very heavy case loads. Clients are willing to pay because they want results and they want them quickly.
