By Dorothy Sanders

When a person has made their decision to get a new pet, they usually have a particular breed of dog in mind. One of the most important things to keep in mind is that this commitment is long term and one should be fully aware of the task they undertaking. Prior to making the purchase, it would be a huge benefit for potential owners to learn more about living with, and raising, Havanese puppies Oregon.

As purebloods, these pups are going to come at a higher price than a mix breed or a rescue dog. For this reason, one's choice of breeder is very important in order to ensure that the animal comes from high quality bloodlines and are healthy. Potential owners would greatly benefit by verifying the reputation and qualifications of any facility from which they plan to make their purchase.

The reason it is so important to know as much about a breed as possible before bringing one of these dogs into the home is because each type is different and will have various behavioral traits and characteristics that are common to them. The animal may, or may not fit one's lifestyle. Knowing these general attributes can make the process of raising them considerably easier.

These particular dogs are in the Toy category and are descended from the Bichon bloodline. Hailed as the national dog of Cuba, the breed is ranked 23rd most popular out of 194 breeds by the American Kennel Club. The breed has only been officially recognized by the AKC since 1996.

Being in the Toy category, the dogs generally way around 9 to 16 pounds as adults, and are 9 to 11 inches high at the withers. They really enjoy playing outside, but they are not built to stay outdoors for hours on end. Because of their higher intelligence and small size, they have the ability to adapt to most any living situation - being as happy in a small apartment as they would be in a large house.

This breed is hypoallergenic, which means that their dander production and shedding is very insignificant, but their grooming needs are such that potential owners need to be aware of them. They have a soft, long, double coat which should be brushed a minimum of twice a week to avoid tangling and matting. Although they do not need to be regularly trimmed, the hair growing between their paw pads and inside of their ears, needs to be removed periodically.

Some common characteristics of the breed is that they are responsive and highly intelligent, playful and gentle, need to get and give affection, and have strong social needs. One matter which might be of concern to some individuals is that the dogs have a tendency to become incredibly attached to a single person and will want to be near them almost constantly - to the point of becoming depressed when they are separated. This makes it difficult for the pups to thrive when they are left alone .

Although there are numerous positive aspects to this particular breed, those interested in owning one need to be aware of the possible drawbacks and whether or not they fit into one's particular lifestyle. Knowing these circumstances can make the transition much smoother, as everyone understands what is to be expected. Responsible pet ownership requires knowledge, dedication, and commitment.
