The calamity that most people are scared of is the one that nobody, not even the scientists, can predict of happening. An earthquake is the calamity that will destroy the homes of families, destroy businesses, but the worst that can happen is that people will have to lose one of their loved ones. However, the essence of Unreinforced masonry buildings seismic retrofit is to ensure that passersby or people who are staying in these buildings will have enough time to evacuate the buildings when there is seismic activity.

Nowadays, a lot of nations are experiencing the harshness of earthquakes. Unfortunately, seismologists and the bright minds still have not figured out an accurate way in predicting its occurrence. This has resulted in nations coming up with policies enable to mitigate the number of casualties and the number of structures that they would have to reconstruct.

The cost in repairing buildings has exhausted the funds of the government. They would also have to repair roads in the soonest possible time for the citizens to go back to their normal lives. Since it may require a great effort for citizens to go back to their normal lives, the presidents of these countries have resulted in a great effort in putting up laws for the betterment of the societies.

The structures were constructed before 1933, during these times, government policies on the standards of construction were inexistent. Furthermore, materials that make edifices have resistance to an earthquake are inexistent. Individuals were making structures lacking a design that makes their every creation resilient to disasters.

It may bewilder one that why did not just the heads of these cities decide in demolishing the edifice. Well, the variable in this is that it still has historical value and cultural value. Moreover, the owners of these structures may be sentimental on losing the building since it represents their hard working predecessors in establishing the buildings.

Due to the mortar used in constructing the building, it has become more vulnerable to an earthquake. Also, it does not have a steel reinforcement in the walls. The exterior walls have no structural attachment to its roof and floor. These reasons have become a concern since it can collapse easily and immediately when the calamity strikes.

In a seismic retrofit, many additions will be applied in order to fully transform the buildings into ones that can handle the strike of an earthquake. Structural attachment will then be installed that will attach the walls, roof and floor to make the structure more intact. Foundations will be made more durable or maybe installing another foundation maybe required.

Although much advancement in technology are existing nowadays, the bright minds still have not figured out the way of the world. However, they are still contributing greatly by providing information they have acquired for humans to have the readiness. Among the advancements that will allow individuals to have information the creation of the World Wide Web.
